Weekend Shopping: ZARA Sale & Fleatique

Initially, I was supposed to blog this yesterday. But, Fash-E was facing some techy difficulties (so annoying!) and here I am, blogging 24 hours late. As you’ve heard, ZARA sale is on since Thursday. I didn’t snag anything - it’s like a warzone at the Liat Tower outlet. My boy managed to grab a red bomber jacket and a work shirt. The boys’ section is not as crazy as the ladies. I don’t think the sale is that good, just wait for everything to be picked over and then hunt for the hidden gems. Just kidding.

Flea-tique is back! I know, it’s prolly happening right now as I’m blogging. The weather is really hot outside. I won’t be checking it out later. WHY? I’m going to the Singapore Toy and Comic Convention! YES! Tofu-Oyako! Tokidoki! Devilrobots! I’m THERE! Then, I’ve a birthday party to attend. Photos! I promise ;)

Merlion Dress: Love or Hate?

(Photos: ST & Wikimedia)

This year’s Miss Singapore Universe pageant has sparked controversies. First, the event was not telecasted due to poor viewership from the previous year. Then, the DRESS. Yes, we’re talking about the Merlion dress. For readers who are wondering what a ‘Merlion’ is, this mythical creature (head of a lion, body of a fish) is the national icon for the country. To find out more about this ‘Uniquely Singapore’ creature, here’s the wiki link.

The 2008 winner, Shenise Wong says , ‘I was thinking, ‘Am I gonna be wearing this big thing on my head that looks like the Merlion was put on me?’ But I’m relieved because it’s like a mermaid sort of dress.’ According to ST, “the white and silver gown has textured ’scales’ made of PVC leather and dangling plastic crystals. And to complete the ensemble - an organza fishtail train and a matching shimmery collar piece that is supposed to spread out behind Shenise’s head like a large fin. To top up the look, several scallop shells adorn her mohawk-styled hair.”

Some slammed the dress. Some praised Singapore for being brave and innovative. What do you think? I honestly think the dress isn’t THAT bad, but it is definitely not beautiful, omfg gorgeous. That aunty hairdo HAS to go! Shenise looks like she just transformed into a mid-life crisis Tai-Tai. The fishtail train looks cheaply made and it doesn’t flow beautifully. I don’t know. I’m not crazy about this dress but I’m quite glad they gave a student a chance - I mean, give him a break! He’s got a steep learning curve.

I definitely think she’s not going to win Best Costume.

Bling Out with Christian Dior Phone!

(Photo: Uber Gizmo)

iPhone may be cool. But, designer phones are the talk of the town. Somehow, this Christian Dior phone reminds me of the Nokia Prism series. Priced between $3500 to $5000, this phone is almost reaching Vertu’s level. So what’s cool about this: 3G connectivity, a touch screen display, a digital camera and graphics and wallpapers. Okay, I think the iPhone is cooler - and possibly, prettier.

I Heart Jena Malone

Jena Malone may not ring a bell - but you may have seen her in some indie flicks such as Saved!, The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys, Donnie Darko or The United States of Leland. No? She’s not your average Hollywood starlet but this ingenue is making her waves in the indie circle, and she dares to be different. Last year, she appeared in Into The Wild (which I’ve been wanting to see!) also starring Emile Hirsch.

I know I’m a little late but Jena Malone was the cover feature in Dirrty Glam’s April 2008 issue. If you haven’t check out the mag, please do! They’re awesome except I can’t understand it – English translation, I beg you. So, I manage to feast my eyes in the editorial which is good enough for now.

Sophisticated Jena. I love her black number with that killer necklace. Yum.

Love that vintage bag! She does have an eclectic style, very different from her peers.

Angel in White. I don’t think blonde is her color.

Jena and Zooey. My two favourite girls.

Spotted: Miu Miu @Garance Dore

I’ve been reading Garance Doré for awhile. And, I’ve been crushing on this Miu Miu dress for a long time - yes, we’ve seen the Topshop and Bysi versions as well. Nobody takes photos like Garance Doré - well, maybe The Sartorialist. I can’t read French but I like to admire the photos and ingenuity that he captures. I’m thinking… maybe I should take up photography?

Look Book: Jelly Gladiators

I was at Great World City for lunch today and I popped by Dorothy Perkins to look look and see see. And, I saw these black jelly gladiators! According to the shop assistant, they just arrived yesterday. I put them on and I saw the “$29″ price tag - that’s it, I HAD to get them! Plus, I only had 5 min before my cab leaves. It’s a great price, don’t you think?

The minute I got into my office, I had to try them on. Despite my aching body (thanks to pilates!), I lift my stinky feet up so Photo Booth can have a good shot of the side view. Haha, boh liao or should I say, nonsensical! I don’t care if the entire Singapore is wearing Gladiators - mine are good for the rainy season and the beach. YEAH!

(Photo: Shop Intuition)

Originally, I wanted to get these hot pink jelly gladiators from Shop Intuition. Unfortunately, I couldn’t order them online because they required a U.S. credit card. Bummer. I can’t stop dreaming about ‘em since then but hey, I got mine - wouldn’t it be nice if they were pink?

If you fancy a high ankle-strap jelly gladiator, you might wanna consider Old Navy’s version of it.

If you like all things up-marketing, you may dig this. The Givenchy jelly gladiators were seen on Carine Roitfeld and also voted as Style’s Item of the Week. Jelly is fierce, don’t you think so?

Vanessa Paradis for Miu Miu Fall ‘08

Johnny Depp dates hot women. That’s all I can say. Here’s a first look at Vanessa Paradis in the Miu Miu Fall ‘08 ad campaign, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot in Los Angeles. After taking the throne from Kirsten Dunst, the fashion house says is, “yet another interpretation of the Miu Miu woman”.

Do you love the scuba-inspired collection? I’m not sure I like the bag that she’s carrying. I wouldn’t consider an “IT” bag. Maybe it’s the colours.
