Halloween 101: Party Like a Rock Star

Haven’t pick out your costumer for tonight? No worries. It’s not too late yet! Fash-E is very inspired by Vogue US’s Rock The House (November, 2001) editorial. Dress like your favourite rocker (I wish I am!) - and I believe alot of people are going to dress as Sarah Palin. Unless you’re Tina Fey - don’t even try. I can’t wait to see what the kids are going to dress up as tonight!

The Fab Four
Fanni Bostrom as John Lennon, Audrey Marnay as Ringo Starr, Tasha Tilberg as Paul McCartney and Trish Goff as George Harrison.

Devon Aoki as Yoko Ono, Ben Northover as John Lennon

Look Book: Happy Halloween!!

To all you sexy pumpkins, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Let’s see. I’ve a huge pumpkin full of Candy Corn, Twizzlers, M&Ms, Twix, Snickers and lollipops in front of my desk. Come get ‘em! The Halloween party is happening tonight at our school - best costume wins an iPod with a special engraving behind. I know a few students are eyeing that iPod! Later, I’ll be watching Animation Nation’s Fear(s) of the Dark (with Berni’s Doll) at Alliance Francaise. Maybe I’ll pop by Zouk or any clubs after the film - it depends how tired I am! Today, I’m a She-Devil and I’m already walking around my office in my costume. I know, kinda boring right? I didn’t have time to plan an elaborate costume.

What are you dressing up as today?

Ahhh. Poked myself with the pitchfork!

Ssshhh. I’m an angel in disguise. Hee.

Spotted: Kanye West’s Fans in Singapore

Alright, anybody went to Kanye West’s ‘Glow in the Dark’ gig last night? If you were there, you might be spotted by Fash-E. Let’s minus the Kanye shades and see what everyone else is wearing. As you know, I’m kinda shy in asking people to take street photos. I’m not Face Hunter or the Sartorialist. So, I secretly took these photos, hehe.

The trio were posing for a photo when I took this. I love that star dress. And the bright blue and red dress. Pretty!! They make me wanna grow my hair - again.

The boys in big colourful hoodies. Bubster said they’re from Topman.

I spotted my students (on the left), Chris and Jordan. Film and Animation students.

The girl on the left in yellow - kept striking cheesy hip-hop poses! Hilarious! She must not have the chance to dress up like this every day. And, there are more girls in hoodies and Kanye shades. Are the 80s back?

Say What? Kanye West in Singapore!

OH YEAH. Last night, Kanye West blazed through a set of his multi-Grammy winning hits such as ‘Gold Digger’, ‘Love Lockdown’ and ‘Stronger’ at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. I sold my tickets to Camera Obscura to party at the “No. 6 highest grossing tour in the world”. Was it worth the $$$? Yup, it was awesome - I could have enjoyed it more if I know his songs a little bit better! The lights were blinding. The drums were thumping hard. The fans were dancing with their glo-sticks and Kanye-inspired shades. I bet 4,000 of them had the same idea of wearing the shades - luckily, I left mine at home. I think Kanye put alot of soul and passion into last night’s performance. At times, he looked a little intense while rapping about signing autographs, designer clothes and things that I can’t personally relate to. This is my first-ever hip hop concert. I appreciate the production and the music, but I can’t really connect with the brand of music. I guess I’m still an indie chick at heart :)

I wasn’t really trying to look hip hop, just for the record.

Polka Dot Top from FCUK. Black Tights from Bugis Market. Sandals from Vincci.

Like my shiny flats? I got ‘em during my trip back home to Malaysia. I bought the same design in two colors - pink/orange and green/silver. They’re from Malaysian homegrown brand, Vincci - cheap and good!

The fans behind me at PEN B. There were some crazy kids out there.

PEN A was getting very packed by the minute.

I chose to stay in the backrow of PEN A to avoid being squashed. Well, I didn’t know what to expect at a hip hop concert. What did I say? BLINDING RIGHT?

Bubster and I, being anti-social and joining the cool kids behind. Hee.

I’m fascinated by the lighting design. Nice!

The man, Kanye West. I was disappointed that he didn’t have any wardrobe change.

I really admire his energy and passion - it really translates into his vocals and body language. I think I started to really appreciate it during the encore performance - not one, but a couple of his bigger hits. I can’t say I’m a Kanye convert but I can understand why he’s so successful in his music. Overall, it was an excellent concert - the energy level was unusually high, and the fans were lovin’ every minute of it.

Cherry Tagged Me!

I MISS NZ. I MISS BLUESKIES.

I know, I know. I’ve been procrastinating on tags. Haha, I always feel so honored when someone tags me. Thanks to Nicole from Cherry Magazine who tagged me on this one. Hee, my problem is tagging people - because they’re more likely to reject my tagging. It’s like playing a game and nobody else is playing with you. Anyway, I traveled back home over the long weekend to see my family, chill out and eat good food. I had a mini adventure getting lost while trekking in the rainforest with Bubster. Other exciting stuff like getting barked at by wild dogs, encountered a wild boar (very cute actually!) and eaten alive by gazillion mosquitoes. Bubster reckoned I’m not his ideal Amazing Race partner. Boo. OK, let’s get to business with the tagging questions:

1. Where do you go to work? (which country, what course, etc.)

I’m currently doing Marketing and PR at an American University in Singapore (haha, should I even name it?). I like the multicultural environment and the people. I met some interesting creative individuals here whom I prolly won’t have the chance to meet anywhere else. I’m also writing for channelnewsasia.com (in particular, movie and concert reviews). I’m also studying a part-time RMIT-SIM Mass Communication degree on top of everything else. Part-time studying is not fun, seriously. It drains you out like tap. Nothing exciting, really. No fancy schools. I’m still paying my own fees from my own pocket. Maybe that’s why I still don’t own any Marc Jacobs.

2. Where do you shop most? (Shop and directions/address)

Hmm. Orchard Road? I’m quite a lazy shopper. I normally go to ZARA, FCUK, Topshop, MNG, Esprit, Warehouse, Calvin Klein, Spin The Bottle - simply because they’re so much more accessible. And, I can be guaranteed good quality and fair price (I don’t like getting ripped off, hehe). You won’t catch me in Haji Lane very often even though I live pretty nearby! Occasionally, I buy homebrands such as Depression (Far East Plaza #04-41) and Swirl. You can catch me at The Cathay every week - I hang out there alot. Haha.

3. Which band/singer do you listen to the most? Why?

I listen to alot of different music. My favourite music genre is definitely indie, alternative rock (in particular, Brit-rock). Bands such as The Beatles, Radiohead, The Pixies, Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Oasis, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Mogwai, The Libertines, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and the list goes on. I also listen to a little electronic (Kraftwerk, anyone?), pop (I love Madonna, sue me), hiphop (recent influence by a crazy friend who’s into the ‘real’ deal like Beastie Boys) and haha, Miles Davis (also, a recent influence by a faculty member) and oh, Edith Paif. Why? Because music is the juice of my soul.

4. What do you often do in your free time?

Stone. Do nothing. Well, I hardly get any free time - and when I do, I sleep. I like read magazines by the pool. Sometimes, I catch up with friends over a cuppa. I’ll read blogs on my Google Reader. And, watch movies and lotsa lotsa TV shows. Man, I think I’m watching wayyy too much TV sometimes. Or, I go travelling - if the bank permits.

OK, the tagging starts now!

1. Bingboompia (I love saying it!) from TraiT

2. Dinie (Posh Palette) from T4JoTR

3. Jo & Sarah from Wottoncool

4. Melly from Greenlaundry

5. Rose from Rose Is Me

I’m Spinning… Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura’s “Let’s Get Out Of This Country”

Honest Confession: I sold my Camera Obscura concert tickets yesterday to a stranger. WHY? Because I’ve sold my soul to Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark tour instead (why must they perform on the same night?) I know, very unlike me. The funny thing is I don’t even listen to Kanye West - I mean, I’ve heard of his songs on MTV and yeah, they’re quite catchy. We all know Kanye has impeccable style for a man - I think he dresses better than P. Diddy. On the other hand, I’ve been listening to Camera Obscura since their Underachievers Please Try Harder album. Don’t get my wrong, I love their music very much. I just feel that Kanye will put on a better show (in other words, bigger budget). I think concerts are suppose to be experiential you know - so Kanye wins this time. All my friends will be at Camera Obscura, and I’ll be hip-hoping with Bubster at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tomorrow.

Just a mini introduction to those you’ve never listened to Camera Obscura: If you listen to Belle & Sebastian, you’re prolly going to dig this six-member Scottish band. They’ll be playing at Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore tomorrow after a failed mission to open Baybeats 2007.

You may be familiar with their 2006’s album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country with catchy pop-tunes like Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be HeartBroken (which is actually a response to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions‘ song “Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?”) and If Looks Could Kill.

Tracyanne Campbell is the one of the voice behind the band and she also plays the guitar. Her 60s pixie hair sets her apart from her fiery female band member, Carey Lander. They have a very individual, and eclectic style which I absolutely adore. Tracyanne has a fascination with swans, scarves and vintage dresses.

Carey Lander also sings and plays the piano and organ. She wears glasses, and dresses in vintage as well. Floral prints, stripes and blazing red hair seem to be her signature style.

Another scarf, another swan. I’m thinking of making a DIY felt swan.

Carey leaves her geeky glasses at home. Love the colours - hair and dress.

If you’re in Singapore, you still have a chance to catch them live at the Esplanade! I believe it’ll be a good intimate showcase. Also, you’ll prolly see a lot of pretentious indie kids around - haha. I’m sorry, but some can be really pretentious. Anyway, you’ll have a great time nonetheless. I wish I could be in two places at the same time. Ahh well.

This is the music video for Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be HeartBroken - one of my faves. It’s a cute video and a dancy song. Enjoy the music!!

When I Grow Up, I Wanna Be Katie Grand

Fashion’s Most Wanted: Katie Grand

Katie Grand just scored a new bi-annual fashion, style magazine gig called Love with publisher Condé Nast (once upon time, tried to sue the ass outta me!). The former editor of POP magazine is one of the most influential single individual in British fashion - also, one of the most wanted stylists in the market. She apparently “earns £3,000-4,000 a day as a fashion stylist and consultant, and at present works 30-40 days a year for Louis Vuitton, about 30 days for Loewe, and another 30 days for a big Italian name.” Like how awesome is that?

Her ‘cool’ factor doesn’t end there. This sassy lady kept every piece of clothing she has ever owned in her her huge closet and even rents a storage space! I can never do that. I mean, the day that I’ll spend “£2,000 on dry-cleaning” will never happen because I’m constantly moving house. Right now, I’m already occupying two closets and a clothes rack (some suitcases) - and my apartment is not getting any bigger. I’ll be like Carrie Bradshaw (hint: Bubster!), “No, please, don’t get me a diamond… get me a really big closet”

If you wanna know how it feels like to be in-demand, just wear her shoes for a day. It is no wonder that Vogue calls her a “fashion superwoman.” Katie, I can’t wait to get my hands on Love in March 2009. Good luck!

From bright fuchsia to metallic black to electric blue, these dresses are going to be the biggest talk in town. Preen has a loyal following from celebrities such as Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow - and you’ve prolly seen Gwyneth wearing the black version of the above.

I think I’m falling in love with dresses once again.
