The Story About Dylan

I’m always excited about local fashion designer/entrepreneurs. When online boutique owner/fashion designer Elaine contacted me about Dylan, I was intrigued by the name, Dylan. I even asked her, “Is the name inspired by Beverly Hills 90210, Dylan McKay?” Well, it was not. Haha. Here’s my email interview with the woman who designs and models her own clothes!

Dylan sounds interesting. Is there a story behind your boutique’s name?
Dylan (Both of them–my son and the shop) came about when I was taking a break from my career as a teacher. Being home most of the time looking after Lil’ D gave me time to pursue my passion in fashion design. So I thought, why not start something my own?

What is your design philosophy?
I believe in standing on your own and finding your personal style that brings out the lady in you. That explains the boutique’s tagline, “Stand on your own”. My designs, as you can tell, are very feminine and exemplifies class. I adore luscious materials like silk, satin, chiffon and I am very particular about the fabrics I use. They have to feel comfortable on the skin, not just look good.

What kind of person do you imagine wearing your designs?
I am calling out to every girl out there who wants to exude the femininity and elegance in them.

Tell me your ideal outfit for a girl’s night out and a hot first date?
Girls night out – let me see. I almost always stay with dresses, skirts plus heels and letting my hair down. I dare say that as long as you are comfortable and confident, you would look good. Elena skirt plus a black ruffled chiffon top would be good. Or, one can don the Francoise if you are eating your heart out at a buffet. A hot date? The venue will be a huge deciding factor.. I believe in dressing appropriately and that it’s better to over dress than under. The Kelly for a dinner date with good conversation is going to be a memorable night.

Who inspires you? Any favourite designers?
There are many good designers out there but I draw my inspiration from vintage dresses I have seen. I love vintage designs -for their full skirts, their bold applique, their bows and laces and ribbons, some of the designers like Victor Costa never fail to make me sit up in my seat… I can just go on about them. I like the range at Anthropologie too. Their unique designs and fabrics are something I would splurge on.

What’s next for Dylan?
I am expanding in to separates in the second collection with more skirts and ruffles. I have already sourced for some unique prints and really excited to get them made into outfits. Also I hope to reach out to more plus sizes women and customise my clothes for them. So far customers have been really happy with my personalised service as I bring the dresses to them for fitting. I hope to keep that up too.

Thanks, for the romantics – do visit Dylan for great V-Day dresses!

For Georgia Lee: There Is No Recession

For the past weeks, everyone was buzzing and criticising Mr Tan Yong Soon’s five-week family trip to Paris to learn cooking at the famed Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. Now, who’s going to make noise about Georgia Lee’s Roman themed-party at Red Dot Museum? If this is not extravagant – I don’t know what is! Haha, I’m not against people splurging their hard earn money to have some fun. If you have the cash, WHY NOT? Why make the recession gloomier than it already is? Why is having fun such a crime? Georgia, please invite me to your party next time :)

With men like these, who needs to walk?

I want slaves like hers. Look who’s the Queen Bee?

Hot Athena and her chubby friends.

Cute dress! Love the color.

She looks possessed, hurr hurr.

I WANT!!!

Ok, they don’t look very cute upclose. Haha. Themed parties are fun :)

You Make Me Sick & Beautiful

From the most talk-about issue this February 2009, Vogue Paris dedicated the entire issue to model, Lara Stone. This ‘fiction noire’ editorial intrigues me – is this sick, or art? I don’t know, but it burns a hole in my mind. Goodbye, sexual repression.

Gong Xi Fa Cai from Singapore!

Welcome to the Year of the Ox!

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone. This is my second Chinese New Year in Singapore – I’ve been so busy with spring cleaning the apartment, shopping for groceries, getting new dollar notes (not for me, of course), buying CNY gifts (for visiting relatives) and preparing food (and eating food. I think I like it better in Malaysia. A little more festive, in my opinion. I miss having my good buddies around. And, my other relatives.

Anyway, I’ll be back on blogging mode in a couple of days. There are more visitings happening tomorrow before I head back to work on Wednesday. Gosh, I’m not in the mood for work – I just wanna eat bak kwa (pork jerky?) and cookies all day. Reality bites.

Spotted: The Stylish Ones at Sundance 2009

Let’s stir away from ‘my’ obsession with Michelle Obama. It’s the Sundance Film Festival 2009 – big indie films, big stars, big ratings (hopefully). It’s a celebration of independent cinema. I’m personally looking forward to several films such as Adventureland (a comedy about the worst job in the world), Paper Heart (Michael Cera in a romantic comedy – need I say more?) and I Love You Philip Morris (the talkabout kissing scene between Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor – it could be very Brokeback Mountain-sweet or super funny). Sundance is also ‘the’ place to check out indie style icons such as Zooey Deschanel, Zoe Kravitz and etc in their gorgeous, effortless ensemble.

Emma Roberts looks spiffy with the black crumpled scarf. New style icon, Zoe Kravitz is climbing the style charts real fast.

You know Kirsten Stewart from the hit but lame film, Twilight – I like how she dressed down for Sundance. Zooey Deschanel looks pretty in that dark emerald colour with black tights. Simple, yet chic.

Paula Patton (left) looks amazing! I die for that blazer. Leven Rambin mixed prints and bright colours perfectly.

Michelle Trachtenberg rocks the plaid – I just hope Georgina doesn’t return to Gossip Girl. Lovely Emily Blunt sports a white coat with gold buttons. Love the beatup boots!

Finally, Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Ball Gown

My apologies in my ‘late’ blogging. You probably found out that Mrs O picked Taiwanese designer, Jason Wu’s off-shoulder white ball gown for the Inauguration Ball. The Obamas looked incredible. I just have to blog about this because it is total awesomeness.

More, More Michelle Obama

Awww.

So, are you a FAN of Michelle Obama’s choice of ‘yellow’? Firstly, it’s not a fashion show – the inauguration is more about Obama being the first Black President of the United States. I think she made a very modest choice – very formal, in my opinion but chic at the same time. It’s not fugly, but it’s very appropriate. Isabel Toledo hit the jackpot big time.

And don’t forget those green Jimmy Choo shoes!

Or green gloves from J.Crew!

The First FamilyFeroshaaa!

Malia and Sasha Obama are working their mini-me styles. I heart those jackets!

Bush is O-V-E-R.

TODAY is a brand new day. I didn’t finish watching the inauguration of Obama – simply because I’m sleepy! There is a repeat happening in the Video Theatre at work today. Every American in this school is beaming like disco lights. Yes, this marks the end of the Bush regime and the beginning of something awesome.

I absolutely heart Pennie’s t-shirt today: Bush is over.

As I was walking up to work this morning, I spotted not THREE, but FOUR hornbills. I feel like I’m living, and working in a National Geographic environment. How lovely is this? I also spotted four squirrels playing in the bamboo trees. Ahh, lovely day, lovely weather. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
