Mad Men Style Guide from 50s to 60s

How to Dress like the ‘Mad Men’ Ladies:

Introducing (from left): Betty Draper, Peggy Olson & Joan Holloway

FYI: I’m crazy about Mad Men (a little late, I know). This show got me all excited about full skirts, vintage scarfs and that ‘perfect’ Betty Draper hairdo. The show’s style showcases the evolution of fashion from the 50s full skirts to 60s mod over the past three seasons. Let’s just say pre-Jackie O style days, shall we? We definitely got a good mix of the 50s and 60s – ooh, I likey! Oh no, Mad Men-mania doesn’t end here – the show’s costume designer, Janie Bryant will be releasing a Mad Men style guide later in the year and a clothing line with QVC! How awesome is that? I’m verbally pre-ordering the book right now.

Who’s your favourite Mad Men‘s Style? Mine is definitely Betty Draper (now Betty Francis). Here’s a quick style guide of all the leading ladies – so take your pick for Halloween ideas:

Let’s Go Nutty: Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour Costumes

This lady is born to shock (and some say, inspire). You’ve to admit that Lady Gaga adds a little excitement to the dull music industry. Her extreme music videos reminded us why MTV was cool in the first place. For the Monster Ball tour, Lady Gaga alleviated her game with (let’s say) crazier costumes and ‘less’ body coverage. It’s part of her entertainment – I say, we play along and love her for who she is. You can’t deny that she’s fabulous (and super crazy). Prepare to be wow-ed!

SPARKLER BRA! Lady Gaga beats Madonna‘s cone bra – hands down!

Is this keyboard super cool or what?

Happy Halloween! I AM COCO CHANEL

halloween-2009-1
Say “Hello” to Coco Chanel! (well, Coco before Chanel is more like it!)

[Recognize this? It's the Audrey Hepburn pose in Funny Face!]

While the entire fashion community is partying at Dolce & Gabbana opening party, I had my own Halloween Party at Tisch Asia. It may be a work event but I had such a blast with my right-hand woman, yes, WONDER WOMAN herself! I forgive her for stealing my lifelong dream to be the Amazonian queen because she was such a good sport at my event. In fact, she was one of the star attractions of the night. Woot! Even the waiters were ‘taking good care of her’ and asking for photos with her. What a queen! Another star attraction is the famous Phua Chu Kang and Rosie Phua duo! Congrats to them for winning Best Costume of the night :D There are some cool costumes like cowboy from Brokeback Mountain, Ris Low (or beauty queen), Freddy Kruger, Heinz Ketchup bottle, baby Flash, Tinkerbell, Slasher Victim No.1 and many more! Check them out, yoo.

Halloween Costumes for the Fashionista

If you’ve been following my Twitter (@xwen) or Facebook Page, you’ll know that I’ll be going as young Coco Chanel for this year’s Halloween. I’ve been shopping around for costume ideas and I thought it would be ideal to compile some of my favourites. I believe you’ll be seeing alot of Michael Jackson, Farah Fawcett and Lady Gaga wannabes this year. Vampires should be pretty popular too – thanks or no thanks to Twilight. There will always be superheroes – Jan beat me to my ultimate Halloween costume, Wonder Woman! But she’ll be the pirated version because her costume is not accurate! Sorry, comic geek speaking here. I strongly believe that you’ve to do it right when it comes to superheroes. If you’re a fashionista, who should you be dressing up as? Here are my picks:

Anna Wintour

Fashion Thakoon Fall 2009

She’s one of the most powerful person in fashion. You’ll fill her shoes for one night – and yes, experience a power trip if you like. Anna Wintour is a very timely choice for a costume. All you need is to get a blonde bob wig, big dark sunglasses, fur coat or tweed jacket and heels or boots. Then, fold your arms and not smile for the rest of the evening. Sounds good to me!

Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

halloween-costume-hollygolightly

A popular yet classic choice. I believe every girl wants to be Holly Golightly. Plus, it’s one of the easiest costumes for every fashionista or Audrey Hepburn fan. All you need is a LBD (who doesn’t have one?), long strands of pearls, black Wayfarers, elbow-length gloves, diamond tiara and bee-hive hair! Holly Golightly never goes out of style.

Cher Horowitz in Clueless

halloween-costume-clueless

Hands up! Who doesn’t love Clueless? (No? AS IF!) I was absolutely crazy about this film when I was a teenager. I wanted to be Cher Horowitz. She’s like Blair Waldorf in the 90s. Her look is PREPPY CHIC – think “mid-90′s fashion: plaid skirts, embellished jackets and cardigans, high-heeled Mary Janes, knee-highs/thigh-highs, and demure headbands“. You’ll have a ball dressing like Cher!

Lady Gaga in Bubble Dress

halloween-costume-lady-gaga-bubble

You’ll get loads of ideas if you plan to dress up as Lady Gaga. However, I think the bubble dress is my favourite of the lot. If I knew how to sew plastic bubbles, I would totally go for it! Here’s a tutorial on how to dress like Lady Gaga… with a little hint on DIY-ing your own bubble dress. Remember to wear a skin colour leotard inside!

Madonna in the 80s

Madonna is a style chameleon. If I have a choice, I would dress up as Madonna during her ‘Lucky Stars’ days. There is a major 80s revival happening right now – it would be too hard to find 80s-inspired clothing and accessories. Make sure you get the hair and lipstick right. Happy Halloween and good luck with your costumes!

STGCC 2009: Cosplayers Playing

Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention 2009 is definitely a place to people-watch. There are many Cosplayers roaming around as various characters from their favourite manga. Cosplay-ing is an interesting hobby which takes ‘dressing up’ to a whole new level. I have my utmost respect for Cosplayers because it requires so much effort in making the costumes and gosh, hair and makeup. Here are some snapshots from Sunday’s STGCC 2009.

Spiders on your cake? No thanks!

So princessy

Super kawaii!

She has ‘red’ eyes, like literally.

This is one funny Elvis – who kept insisting I take a photo with him.

If I were to Cosplay, I will dress like that.

This is a form of exercise – stretch those arms!

Heavy Paws.

NARUTO! A classic choice. Love those sandals.

This is classic. Check out the expression of the dude behind! LOL!

Sneak Peek: Christian Lacroix the Costumier

After the Audi Fashion Festival 2009 press conference, Carlos and I popped by the National Museum of Singapore to check out the Christian Lacroix the Costumier exhibition. It was a perfect day for a museum visit as there were no crowds except for a few art students on a mission to complete their assignment (Carlos included!). I was truly excited to immerse myself in 20 years of costume design work, from costumes to sketches by fashion genius Christian Lacroix. Bring on the Parisian music, charm and haute couture!

If you haven’t visit the exhibition yet, let me show you why you should:

Patricia Field Talks “Confessions of a Shopaholic”

One more week to the opening of “Confessions of a Shopaholic” in Singapore! I can’t wait to catch the film when it hits our cinemas. I found these videos of Patricia Field commenting on the costumes in the film. From the fame of ‘Sex and the City’, Patricia Field is no doubt the perfect choice to dress up Becky Bloomwood (played by Isla Fisher). Let’s see what she has in store:

Patricia Field talked about recreating a Lanvin dress for Becky Bloomwood because it didn’t come in purple! Only Pat can pull off a stunt like that!

Patricia Field talked about the first outfit that you see in the film.

Style Tip: Patricia Field talked about mixing and matching to create a new ‘mood’.
