For the longest time, I never knew the reasoning behind haute couture (French for ‘high fashion’). Are the high costs and man-hours really worth it? The answer is YES. The idea of couture is to inspire. Who? Fashion designers. Fashionistas. The regular Jane who shops at Target. These high art, fashion installations are created to blow our minds and remind us that we can always dream of high fashion. Couture also helps designers to sell their Ready-To-Wear collection. It creates a vision for the design house. As for myself, I become a fan of what the design house if capable of. Best of all, I know exquisitely and beautifully made “dreams” do exists. Here are some of my favourites from Fall Couture 2010:
I’m in love with Burberry jewellery A/W 2009. Burberry successfully made chains and barbed-wires super chic and classy. I’m lusting over the tangled chains bracelet (USD$395) composed of two interwoven chains. The barbed-wire ring (USD$175), a polished brass double ring with barbed wire detailing, is sophisticated tribute to punk. I can’t tell you how much I’m digging these jewellery right now. If you’re in Singapore, go check them out at the new and largest South-East Asian Burberry store in ION Orchard - because I fell in love with these in that outlet.
I had the best “seat” in the house for The Ashley Isham Couture Showcase by Lee Hwa Jewellery at the Audi Fashion Festival 2009 on Friday, 8 May 2009. I wasn’t able to upload the entire show on YouTube because it was too long! Boo. And, I exceeded my limit on Vimeo. Here’s an edited version of the show on Friday:
The show kicked start with Singapore singer, Alicia Pan in a glitzy gold number singing “L-O-V-E” (originally by Nat King Cole). I started seeing stars as ultimate bling bling couture gowns paired with Lee Hwa Jewellery walked down the runway with the theatrical-like music. No offence but I seriously didn’t like the Tim Burton-like music.
Otherwise, Ashley Isham definitely pushed it up one more notch for the Singapore fashion industry with his couture collection. I had such a blast! Will be back with more videos. Tonight, closing show – Vivienne Westwood Anglomania collection!
Here’s a taste of last night’s Christian Lacroix Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2009 show at Tent@Orchard. British Supermodel, Jacquetta Wheeler closed the show in a gold couture number. More videos to come
Mind my French. I’m such a lucky b*tch to be able to attend the Christian Lacroix Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2009 opening gala for Audi Fashion Festival 2009. It was an experience that I would definitely cherish for the longest time. Visually stunning. Deliciously beautiful. Intricately brilliant. I can’t describe it further. It’s haute couture, what do you expect? I was on a perpetual high. Although we had to wait abit for the show to kick start at 1015pm, the show was worth the wait. This is the first time Christian Lacroix showcased his couture collection in Singapore, let alone Asia. I suddenly feel so fortunate to be in this part of the world. This black tie gala event served food by St. Regis. Here are the 15 couture looks from the collection (in chronological order) – trust me, my camera is not doing the collection justice:
This is ready-to-wear couture, I say.
Yummy blazer!
Love the gold basket bag!
The model is cute as button.
Stunning!
This is beautiful beyond… words.
WOW.
This poor model almost tripped over! Phew.
And presenting… supermodel Jacquetta Wheeler!
The end of my first couture show. The beginning of AFF 2009.
‘Coco Avant Chanel’ premiered at a Champs-Elysees theater in Paris yesterday – like finally! Audrey Tautou (who played Coco Chanel, of course) wore this black-and-white floral frock from Lagerfeld’s Spring couture collection. I like how she jazzed the look up with a sleek cropped leather jacket. And, I love her shoes!
According to the reviewers, the film definitely surpassed its expectations! I can’t wait till this film hits our silver screens in Singapore. I wonder which lucky movie distributor will be bringing this film in. Let’s have a fashion movie club night out!
After the Audi Fashion Festival 2009 press conference, Carlos and I popped by the National Museum of Singapore to check out the Christian Lacroix the Costumier exhibition. It was a perfect day for a museum visit as there were no crowds except for a few art students on a mission to complete their assignment (Carlos included!). I was truly excited to immerse myself in 20 years of costume design work, from costumes to sketches by fashion genius Christian Lacroix. Bring on the Parisian music, charm and haute couture!
If you haven’t visit the exhibition yet, let me show you why you should:
Dates: Fri 20 Mar 2009 – Sun 7 Jun 2009; 10:00am to 6:00pm
Verdict: I’m giving this exhibition a two thumbs up! It makes me wanna jet away to Paris and book that $400 Christian Lacroix ticket for Audi Fashion Festival 2009.
