Congrats! Three Golden Globes Nominations for Tom Ford’s “A Single Man”

What do you say, Tom Ford gets a bigger nod as a filmmaker. Now with three Golden Globes nominations under his belt, I wonder if he’s going to dump fashion for good (don’t leave us, Tom!). You hear me, “A Single Man” received three nominations this morning: Colin Firth is up for Best Actor in a Drama and Julianne Moore for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama; and the score as well.

CONGRATS AGAIN! I can’t wait till the film opens in Singapore.

Chanel’s “Coco In Motion”: Stop Motion Film for V Magazine

chanel-coco-in-motion-vmag

Natalie Portman is smokin’ hot in Chanel. Photographed by Mario Testino for the latest V Magazine issue #62, Portman toys with the androgynous look and boy, I’m sooo in love with the styling for this cover shot. According to vmagazine.com, V “commissioned young filmmaker Stephen Smith to create stop-motion footage that captures the eternal chic of Chanel to celebrate the issue. You’ve gotta love stop-motion – it’s awesome. Think Michel Gondry meets high fashion – coupled with catchy French pop music (anyone knows the song title?). It reminds me of why I love film in the first place. Enjoy the video.

500 Days of Summer: Blue and Vintage

I bet most of you have seen the film and love it (except one friend of mine! Jan, what were you thinking?). I love it – it was fresh, fun and … it makes me wanna dance to Hall & Oates‘ “You Make My Dreams” in the middle of Bugis market. OK, back to fashion. For the longest time, I’ve been buying vintage off eBay but never wore them enough. I don’t know why – maybe I’m shy? I learnt to appreciate vintage after watching The Rachel Zoe Project and reading streetstyle blogs featuring vintage ensembles with modern acccessories. Zooey Deschanel’s character, Summer wore mostly vintage in the film, 500 Days of Summer. If you notice, her character sparkles in the shade of blue most of the time.

An interview with MTV.com, costume designer, Hope Hanafin said, “It was for her [blue] eyes, but it was also the romance from a male point of view. Even when you first see her, she has on a white shirt, but still has a blue butterfly. So it tracks all the way through. I just wanted there to be a way to make her stand out. Because she is such the object of desire that in a crowded room the audience and Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) would immediately be drawn to her. She becomes a magnet. The only other place blue is used is the dance sequence, after Tom’s first night with Summer. The whole world would turn into her, so that’s what everyone is in blue in that scene — the construction workers, the mailmen, the office workers. Everything becomes kind of a reflection of his love for her.”

Denim Skirt from Built By Wendy

“A lot of it is vintage, but there’s still plenty that’s not. Though I have great respect for these romantic comedies where secretaries are wearing Prada, I wanted [“500 Days”] to be kind of the anti-“Sex and the City.” So, Zooey’s wearing clothes that her character really could afford, things are also repeated. Her clothes are a mix of things from [places like] Old Navy, GAP, BCBG and then there’s a lot of vintage. But not all of it was glamorous vintage. She has a Built By Wendy denim skirt (pictured above) and a couple other great things.”

Dress from Western Costume

This dress in the wedding scene was picked due to its architectural lines since Tom’s an architect. The dress may be made of straight lines but it is still romantic and soft.

Vintage Dress from Palace Costume

I absolutely heart this floral vintage dress from Palace Costume. It’s very flirty and charming at the same time. Unfortunately, this is the very scene that broke Tom’s heart. Oh well, at least it was an awesome dress. Look on the bright side, right?

On a completely separate note, here’s Zooey Deschanel and Joesph Gordon-Levitt retrace a scene from their film (500) Days of Summer by paying homage to punk rock icons, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen in “Sid and Nancy”. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll get the drift. Excellent stuff.

More yummy promo stuff from the film?
Here’s a bank heist video feat. She & Him’s “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”. Fun stuff. According to USAToday, “Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt say they hope to team up repeatedly and have aspirations of being a regular screen couple, like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers or Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. They’re not a real couple, but they’re good at faking it.”

“… Gordon-Levitt plays a stoic man in a neat blue suit, turning to crime in a moment of absolute desperation. Deschanel is the gorgeous, wide-eyed teller, disarming the dangerous man (metaphorically speaking) in a playful, twirling, fox-trotting dance through the stuffy, starkly lit marble lobby. The other dour denizens go about their business unaware.”

Fash-Film: The September Issue

the-september-issue-4I finally caught the film. What took me so long? This film is only shown in GV cinemas … and I can’t say I’m the biggest fan. I’m a cinema snob – I only go to The Cathay. Enough said. First of all. The September Issue isn’t all about Editor-In-Chief, Anna Wintour (or at least we were made to believe from the trailers). And, it’s not even about fashion. In fact, it’s about the nitty, gritty slaving of the Vogue US team to produce the most anticipated issue of the year and thickest of Vogue’s history, the September 2007 issue featuring Sienna Miller on the cover.

the-september-issue-3

So, is Anna Wintour anything like Meryl Streep’s character in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’? Hardly. I don’t think she’s as icy as she was portrayed by the media. She’s a busy woman – what do you expect? She has no time for schoomizing and canoodling. She admits that she is a private person and you get to see the warm side of Anna Wintour in the film.

the-september-issue-1
The film focuses a fair bit on No.2 lady in Vogue – Creative Director, Grace Coddington, who absolutely stole the show. Both Anna and Grace worked in Vogue for over 20 years together and it is interesting to witness the dynamics between the creative duo. It was interesting to see her reaction on her hardwork – a $50,000 editorial got trashed by Anna Wintour so easily in the work room. I bet this wasn’t the first time in the past 20 years. I don’t think they hate each other but they are not BFFs. I’m sure they both respect each other’s abilities and strength despite the creative differences.A good example is a scene in Paris where they were both waiting for the lift – and hardly say a word to one another. That scene speaks for itself.

the-september-issue-5
To be honest, Grace is quite a character. She found a calling in fashion through modeling in the early days. Mind you, she was gorgeous. I used to produce TVCs and prints so I do know how much hard work goes into these photo shoots. Grace has a fantastic eye for styling fashion editorials. I love the way her mind works to create such a fairytale for fashion. For every creative work, there is an editor – that person is Anna Wintour. Anna sees the ‘The Big Picture’ but Grace only sees her own work. She’s not being difficult for the sake of it – she’s creating one of the greatest magazine in the world.

Go catch ‘The September Issue’ and you’ll know why.

Fash-Review: Coco avant Chanel

I finally caught Coco avant Chanel with moi girlfriends. Unfortunately, the film didn’t cut it for me. OK, it didn’t knock me off my seat but it’s definitely watchable. I guess now I know why it’s called “Coco BEFORE Chanel”. To be honest, nothing really happens in this biopic. No major conflict. No epiphanies. The film focuses on the unconformist Coco Chanel (starring Audrey Tautou) and her relationships with a rich playboy and an English businessman. She isn’t afraid to say what she thinks. She isn’t afraid to advocate simplicity. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s wife. She was a rebel in her days. This is not a fashiony film – but I do like some aspects of the film. Firstly, everything sounds better in French. Secondly, the costumes are not extensive but good enough (apparently curated by Karl Lagerfeld himself). Let’s take a look at the costumes featured in the film:

Coco makes straw hats for a start. Get a similar stripe tee from Uniqlo.

The bag is really cute.

Countdown to Harry Potter: Emma Watson’s Style

I’ve to admit that I was a lil’ upset when Emma Watson announced her break from acting to pursue her university education. Of course, it’s a practical choice – but I can’t help but notice what a gorgeous grown woman she has turned out to be! *sobs* I feel like a proud ‘mama’ – just a figure of speech. Are you excited about Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince? The magic kids are out and about promoting the film – and let’s see what Hermione Granger has swopped her thick witch robe for:

Yay to this Proenza Shouler dress and gladiator platforms! I love this.

Who cares about the wardrobe malfunctions of this vintage Ossie Clark printed gown? She looks gorgeous in this London premiere of the film.

So incredibly chic. Emma rocked this Proenza Schouler leather-topped halter dress and strappy sandals at the film’s N.Y.C. premiere. She’s definitely a new fashion icon – I’m jealous to bits.

Mark your calendar – and book your ticket to Harry Potter. Now!

Counting Down to… 500 Days of Summer

I’m a total sucker for indie romantic comedies like ‘500 Days of Summer‘ and ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist‘. To be honest, the most romantic film of all time for me is ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘ because it is so absurd and real. I cried. I laughed. I cheered. It’s sooo romantic – literally. ‘500 Days of Summer‘ has the winning formula to my ‘perfect date movie’… something Bubster will not cringe, if you know what I mean. Here are the five positive signs:

  1. Fox Searchlight – the independent arm of Fox
  2. Zooey Deschanel (my fash-icon)
  3. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (I’ve hots for him since ‘Mysterious Skin‘).
  4. The Playlist: Regina Spektor, The Smiths, Doves – you get the drift
  5. The Polaroid-inspired film poster.

Love her dress! I’m really digging the styling of this film. Real yet chic.

A photo collage from the film. Cool stuff!

Watch the trailer and start counting down :D
