Rewind: MTV Asia Awards 2008

MTV Asia Awards is back! I attended the first two MAAs back in 2002 and 2003. You know what, I had one of the best time of my life at the awards. The energy levels were insanely high. The crowd went nuts and screamed their lungs out. Here’s a funny story: I actually sang Bon Jovi’s It’s My Life at The Heeren stage to win my pair of tickets to the first MAA in Singapore. Then, I danced at Hard Rock Cafe Singapore to get seal my seat next to Avril Lavigne and behind Blue in 2003. Talk about cheap thrills. This year, I was offered an all-expense paid trip to MAA - but I couldn’t make it because of my HK trip. Oh well. Let’s see what the stars are wearing at the event held in Genting Highlands, Malaysia:

Jared Leto and co-host, Karen Mok, looking awesome. The MTV VJs aren’t looking too bad themselves, except for Utt - what is with that curry puff hair-do!

VJ Taya and Zhu Zhu both look ultra hot!

Is Leona Lewis preggers or something? Amanda (from Electrico) looks super cute in her new hair!

Yikes! That’s a yellow/purple disaster! However, I like the black and white couple.

These guys are geeky adorable! Not feeling all-white though.

Are you Panic! at the Disco? I heart funky blazers.

Give the Pussycat Dolls some love - man, they can look trashy sometimes. Or, is that the whole idea?

I’m seeing too many black and white. B-O-R-I-N-G.

Let the show begin. Take those chopsticks off your hair, Karen!

Malaysian Dreamgirl: First Online Model Search

Move over, America’s Next Top Model! Malaysia is proud to present to you, Malaysian Dreamgirl, our very own model hunt. Or rather the first online model search. This is a brilliant idea - take a reality TV show to the web, and dress girls in skimpy clothing (and not risk censorship because it’s the Internet!). Of course, it’s not the most original idea as Singapore has its own clicknetwork.tv - bah, boring and whiny. The Malaysian record-breaking show is hosted by Sazzy Falak and judged by former beauty queen, Elaine Daly, funny blogger Kenny Sia and stylist Lim Jimmy.

Currently, it’s airing Episode 14 (Yes, I’ve missed out alot!). Anyway, why is Kenny Sia judging this show? Is he our answer to what? Simon Cowell? I understand his position as a famous blogger - and of course, he’ll offer a generous push in terms of web traffic. But, Kenny Sia?? As Elaine Daly said, “Give him (Kenny) anything with short skirt, he’ll say ‘Yes’”. Gosh, we’re going to see some ‘Ah Lians‘ on the show if Elaine and Jimmy do not stop him!

These are my two faves from the show. Jay (left) and Eyna (right) who both possess strong features, sharp expressions and exudes the right confidence. Jay is still in the running for the title of Malaysian Dreamgirl but Eyna was voted out. Seriously, there are fuglier girls in the competition - oh well, results are based on the public’s votes. I guess it’s a popularity contest, or rather who has richer friends to vote for them.

Ooh, absolutely fierce! In this Precinct 2 shoot, Jay really nailed it in this androgynous look. She could almost passed off as a snappy yuppie! I love the power and confidence I’m feeling from this shot. She deserves to win, and I really hope she does.

This 25-year old beauty has potential. She may not be top model material but she can definitely sell herself as a print model. I think she has the right poses that none of the girls have. Eyna has a future - and I hope she builds up her portfolio and her career in modelling.

Here are classic comments from the one, and only Kenny Sia:

“You look like some makcik (aunty) from a pasar malam (night market)”

“Can you spit it (chewing gum) out because that’s not impressing us”

“Your hair is wrong. Your skirt looks like it is picked up from a rubbish bin”

“Your jacket looks like it is made from some table cover from some Mamak (Indian) stall”

Malaysian Fashion: Vincci

Yours truly is back from the land of “Truly Asia”. I’ve to admit, I didn’t shop extensively - except for two pairs of shoes from Vincci also known as VNC in Singapore. The shoes were not part of the plan as this trip is a family reunion, rather than a shopping adventure. But, my quick retail therapy followed after my mum’s win at Genting’s Casino. Technically, my shoes were generously contributed by the late Uncle Lim. Thank youuu!

Vincci or VNC is prolly one of the trendiest, and most affordable Malaysian shoe boutiques. I grew up wearing Vincci shoes for as long as I remember. And till this day, I would stop by and shop at any Vincci stores whenever I head back to M’sia. I enjoy feasting my feet in the buffet of shoes of the season - although I dare to admit, they’re not the most comfortable. Plus, they don’t last forever. Hey, they’re cheaper than shoes in Singapore!

I believe in investing in good, comfortable shoes and pretty feet (no blisters pls!). But Vincci are fun shoes - low risk, low cost right? Well, I can’t afford a Manolo Blahnik yet but you’ve to start somewhere. Vincci is my shoe haven since forever… it’s good to reminisce. OK, did I mention I love the new campaign with this model’s pixie hairdo? I want that hair (if my Mickey ears disappeared).
