The cult of Feiyue
You know what’s “Flying Forward”? Feiyue sneakers. The first time I saw a “re-branded” pair of Feiyue sneakers is in Paris. I thought, “Isn’t this the cheap sneakers from China? And… why does it cost 100 bucks!” Then, I discovered the cult status of Feiyue (through the Internet, of course – how else!). Listen up, Feiyue is the new Converse.
Born in the 1920s, the Chinese Feiyue sneakers were popular in the 1930s among the Chinese martial art community due to its flexibility and light material. In 2006, sneaker enthusiast Patrice Bastian rejuvenated the image of Feiyue (translated as “flying forward”) and relaunched the new collection in Europe. The rest is history. Here’s a funny story. While I was away for two weeks, Havaianas sent me this ‘suspicious‘ looking crate to my office. Apparently, it triggered off like a series speculations on the contents of this crate. Even the cleaner thought an animal has died in there. Well, “Warning: Exotic Animal Inside” was all over the crate – how can you blame her? The courier literally hung it outside my office door – and no one dared to touch it! I finally opened it this week and voila! A pair of the latest collection from Havaianas’ Slim Animals collection. Launched in June 2010, you can get a pair at Havaianas store at ION Orchard #B2-42.
