Fash-Blogger: Japanese Streets

I wonder why I’ve never heard of Japanese Streets. It’s a street style blog which catalogs funky, chic Japanese people since 2002. Talk about super overdue! Started by photo-journalist Kjeld Duits, Japanese Streets was probably the first Japanese street style blog, even more – one of the first fashion blogs ever existed. Currently, there are more than 20,000 photos archived and his team of photographers have expanded since. I love the clean layout of the blog and its very well-organized content. You might smack me for not discovering it earlier – but hey, there’s always a first for everyone no?

SUPER DIVA!

Her beaded butterfly bag is too kawaii!

Fash-Blogger: Auckland Street Style

Here’s a new blogger in town from Down Under: Auckland Street Style. I’ve been to Auckland a few times now. I love the city – it’s relaxing actually. Unfortunately, I’ve not spent enough time to observe the street style in this lovely city. It’s nice to be inspired by the relaxed city peeps – a breath of fresh air if you ask me. Here are some stylish Aucklanders who are seen without their ‘jandals’ and board shorts:

Deconstructing Street Style Shutterbugs

You probably have seen this ingenious diagram below by Refinery 29. It’s probably the cleverest thing I’ve seen for a long time. The fashion blogosphere tend to get stagnant once in awhile. It is refreshing to see the deconstruction of The Sartorialist‘s preying methods in a form of a flow chart. Ironically, this makes a lot of sense.

If you’re unfamiliar with street style shutterbugs, Fash-E will give you the 411 on the more ‘popular’ street style photographers and the fashionable peeps that will catch their eye. Let’s begin with the one but not the only …

The Sartorialist

How many of these photos have you seen on The Sartorialist? Plenty. Scott Schuman loves taking quirky, old, rich-looking (not sure how rich they actually are!) and sometimes, preppy men. If you’re wearing a shirt, rolled up sleeves, boat shoes (why are they still in fashion?), ultra tight pants – you’re gonna catch his attention.

If you’re a model – all the better. I don’t believe streets are filled with unbelievably beautiful women. It’s just impossible. Then again, it’s a street style blog – some sort of curative work is required.

Garance Dore

This Parisian street style blogger/illustrator has a gift for photographing her subjects and making them look ethereal and simply beautiful. Especially women. Garance Dore is clearly one of my favourite street style shutterbugs. I love her illustrations of women because they always look out-of-bed sexy and ‘real’.

Did I mention that she’s dating The Sartorialist? What a sweet irony.

Face Hunter

The Face Hunter has an eye for individuals who are not afraid to dress up and be true to themselves. There is no archetypal subjects – but rest assured, they are all pretty kooky and stylish. Yvan Rodic travels the world with a hunger for style. And yes, he finds them every day.

Unlike The Sartoralist and Garance Dore, the Face Hunter loves colours. You won’t see too many monochromatic color schemes as he mixes graphics, colours and even hairstyles. I guarantee that you won’t see the same thing everyday. I guess that makes him an ‘individual’ street style shutterbug as well.

JAK & JIL BLOG

He stalks pretty shoes, can’t you tell?

Tommy from JAK & JIL BLOG literally parks outside every fashion show in Europe. He is most known for photographing models off-duty, fashion editors/stylists/writers/interns (you-name-it), shoes shoes shoes and even some celebrities. His style is pretty much “paparazzi” but with a touch of class.

Almost everybody looks unbelievably gorgeous on his blog. It makes you want more. As a street style shutterbug, you’ve gotta have an expensive camera coupled with a good eye for style and photography. So, who will be the next Sartorialist? We shall see.

Rock Your Style: Coachella 2009!

I arrived in Singapore at 2am – and I woke up at 12noon. I’m missing Japan already. Tonight, I am heading back home – good ol’ Malaysia for my friend’s wedding. I’m one of the bridesmaids for the first-time ever! It should be loads and loads of girly fun. That’s my update on my boring little life.

Coachella is back! It is the music event of the year (at least for me!) for the best street style spottings. Style.com compiled the best of Coachella style – rain or shine, everyone has to look chic!

Love her Indian headpiece and funky sandals!

1.. 2… 3… I’m counting her colours.

Very Harajuku-ish.

I like the fact that she’s wearing a sarong from her hometown, Rwanda.

Cute parasol, Spice Girl!

Spotted: Japanese at Coachella.

Shoes not required.

This girl is a walking vintage collection.

Spotted: STYLE from TOKYO

Six days to T-O-K-Y-O! I have been ultra-busy these days with work, meetups and etc etc etc. I wish I had more time to prep and research on the awesome Tokyo scene. Well, BB promised me a list – I haven’t had a chance to follow up on that. One of my favourite street style blogs is STYLE from TOKYO. The Japanese are sooo fashion-forward and bloody daring. Their fashion choices reflect their individual identities – unlike our very homogenous local fashion scene. I don’t think I’m any different than others. I can’t dress like the Japanese. Let’s just say I’m pretty conservative with my wardrobe selection. Japanese street style is very inspiring, here’s why:

The Chanel bag. The shoes. The jacket. The hair. She’s awesome.

Easy geometry.

That is one large shoe to fill.

Boy, I want your brown leather jacket!

Cool sweater, mister.

Another cool-lookin’ boy. Love everything about him.

Her outfit looks extremely heavy.

Super kawaii! Can’t wait for TOKYO!

Singapore Street Style from Streetsnaps

For my foreign readers, Streetsnaps is Singapore’s answer to The Sartoralist and Face Hunter with a little local twist. It’s a collective of avid photographers who roam around the island looking for stylish individuals. As we know, Singapore is not exactly New York, London or Paris. I’ve lived here for eight years, and I think Singaporeans are unique in their quirky little way. This young nation is still seeking their own identity and style. Someone said, “Singapore’s today is when New York was yesterday”. I believe it could be true.

She makes dressing up in prints so effortless. Love the shoes & belt.

Love the mask and “sex, drugs rock & roll” necklace.

Fierce heels! This girl is really rocking Ferosha!

Lace tights!

How come I’ve never met these people?

Spotted: Daring Feathers

She has my utmost respect for daring the streets with this feather cape.

This is something you’ll never see in Singapore. Thanks, Yvan for spotting her.

Spotted: Face Hunting in Singapore

So, Yvan from Face Hunter has left Singapore for Jakarta. It seems like he found more fashion forward individuals over there! Why are you people hiding? Anyway, I didn’t manage to catch him – it was crunch week for me as I had multiple work events and school deadlines to meet. Let’s see who has been caught on camera last week by the Face Hunter himself:

Tracy Phillips, the face of Zouk literally.

Chia Wei Choong, designer of Antebellum

Tan Qiu Wen, designer of IamwhoIam

Possibly, Min Lee from Juice

Fashion blogger, Nicole from Cherry Magazine

Hmm, isn’t that the same girl? Qiu Wen? Love the socks!

Love Love Love the shoes. Who are you, stranger?
