Trendspotting: The Maxi Dress (Resort 2011 Edition)

I recently bought a Tribute to Madonna maxi dress from Tee and Cake for Topshop in London. And I’m in love! Right now, I’m on the hunt for moreee maxi dresses. I noticed more and more maxi dresses at last week’s Resort 2011 shows. I don’t believe that it is necessary to wear heels with maxis. I like them with flats or sandals. I can’t believe I used to be afraid to wear maxis – I thought I will drown in excess cloth! But noooo, I’m so loving them now. Here are some of my favourite maxis from the recent Resort 2011:

Trendspotting: Chic Rides by Vanguard Bicycles Singapore

This post is inspired by Miss Glitzy‘s post on eco-fashion bikes. I discovered Vanguard Bicycles about a month ago. Who are they? They customized and restored classic, limited edition bicycles at their workshop at Rodyk Street. If you’re looking for the one-of-a-kind bicycle, they can definitely do the job. Inspired by art, architecture, music, the ergonomics of each bike is “treated as unique kinetic sculpture/architecture with a distinct character and personality”. Here are some of the bikes which I totally heart:

I. WANT. THIS. From the April 2010 collection, CLAIRE is a beauty. Sponsor pls?

ZETH Stretched Cruiser in matt black is sold. I absolutely heart it.

BYRON is an ultra cool 1960s  restored messenger bike, don’t you think?

I love the baby blue. This ISLINGTON velocommute bike is also sold.

Trendspotting: Clogs are Spring Chic

Paris Fashion Week is heaven. I noticed something similar about the Chanel Spring 2010 RTW and Louis Vuitton Spring 2010 RTW: CLOGS. I don’t know about you but I was like, “Really?” I really like the Chanel versions but the fringy, suede peg-heeled LV clogs, I don’t know. I really really dig those new Chanel stockings with ballerina lace details! And, that chain-like garter belt, So awesome! You’ll be hearing these clogs banging away on pretty marble floors before you know it. This is what the good people from style.com said about clogs, “If it’s good enough for Karl, bring it on”. I think they’re cute! Now, where are the cheaper alternatives?

Trendspotting: Thigh-High Boots

Nobody cares about practicality when it comes to style trends. I’ve seen girls walking around hot, sticky, humid Singapore in leather boots – or leather jackets. Seriously, people rather sweat and stink in their killer gear. I guess it makes sense for shopping malls to freeze our asses off so we can layer more for fashion’s sake. Now, I wanna see people sporting thigh-high boots in Singapore! Remember Julia Roberts strutting down in her hooker thigh-high boots in Pretty Woman? Yes, these boots are refined to fit the high-fashion society and now they are really made for walking.Think Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada when she transformed into those delicious Chanel boots. Envy!

As seen on Prada and Rodarte shows, the key is to have those boots so high up that they go over your knees. I received The Zoe Report in my email today about this trend and Rachel Zoe said, When incorporating over-the-knee boots into an outfit, think of them as an alternative to tights or leggings. Throw them on with a mini dress or oversized sweater and shorts, and strut your stuff like Vivian would.” (Vivian, as in Julia Roberts in the film!). I absolutely dig some of the newly designed boots out there but am I getting one? Nay.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this Stella McCartney‘s!

Refinery29 put together a guide to wearing thigh-high boots this season. Here it is:

Avoid these if you want to live. No fishnets – no no no.

Trendspotting: Add a Lil’ Christmas Cheer!

Can you believe this? Three more days to Christmas! I’m jetting off tomorrow night to NZ for an intimate family celebration with my boy’s family. It’ll be my first ‘ang moh’ (white man) Christmas – ooh, I can’t wait to pop Christmas crackers! So exciting! I haven’t pack my bags – omg, what to wear, what to bring. I need a haircut too! I don’t think I’ve time for it. I’m so disorganised. Anyway, why dampen the Christmas cheers with the recession crisis? Just add a little piece of trend to jazz up your Christmas wardrobe:

Rosette Heels

Spring is just around the corner! There is no reason why you shouldn’t add a little floral into your wardrobe. No? Scarlett Johansson, Cameron Diaz and Eva Longoria are jumping on to Spring trends!

Multi-Colour Prints

Let’s graduate from watercolour prints to a variety of awesome colour prints. There is nothing more striking than colours colours colours. Why are other bloggers sticking to the monotones? Beats me.

Bow-Topped Dresses

Totally red-carpet worthy or even for your office Christmas dinner. This spells sexy and sassy. If it works for Charlize Theron, Eva Mendes and Liv Tyler, it can work for you too :)

Happy Holidays!!

Trendspotting: Multi-Coloured Nails

I want candy-coloured nails!

I used to colour my nails in multi-colours until someone told me that I look like a clown. Now, look who’s laughing. I think its a fabulous idea to carry off “statement” manicures especially when they’re multi-coloured! You could easily get away with this since LA’s Tallulah Morton and New York’s Tess Brokaw were both spotted in funky coloured nails. I can’t wait to go home and paint my nails tonight. I’m totally going wild this weekend. You can easily get cheap nail polish from The Face Shop or Missha.

What’s your combination?

Street Peeper: The Next Sartoralist?

First, The Sartoralist and Face Hunter. If you’ve read yesterday’s ST Urban, you’ll also discover interesting Singapore street styles. It seems like fashionistas, and designers are seeking inspiration from consumers – fresh off the urban streets. Now, Street Peeper team is busy snapping snazzy dressers and style ideas in major cities around the globe. Who knows? They might just be out in Orchard Road or Haji Lane, right now. Do we need more Sartoralists? I would suggest more Asian faces, please.

Trendspotting: How to be Hollywood Royalty

Double Strand Pearls

If pearls are good enough for Carrie Bradshaw, they’re good enough for me. It seems like celebs are lovin’ pearls and the trick is to layer them with multiple strands while pairing with the classic black dress. Of course, double is what Ashlee Simpson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow are doing.

Bright Jackets

There is nothing more show-stopping than loud, bright colours! I love Rihanna‘s spunky hot pink jacket. Even Katherine Heigl and Kim Kardashian are sporting bright jackets with dark denim. Smart!

Leather Mini Skirts

Bring back the 80s staple! I used to be vegan, so I’m against the usage of real leather. You can opt for latex or faux leather like Nicky HIlton. Selita Ebanks and Ashley Olsen are pairing their minis wiht monotones and fierce shoes!

Short Suits

Show off your long legs by coordinating your black blazers with shorts like Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Natalie Portman. I love how Rihanna paired it with a black sheer top and bright orange heels! Otherwise, you can add a little colour like Natalie with a Maroon tee.

Shimmery Beige Dress

Don’t be afraid to shine amongst the crowd. Neutral with a little sparkle can be very alluring and sexy. Take the cue from Claire Danes, Mila Kunis and Heidi Klum.
