Rockin’ With Ash @Fort Canning

Firstly, EXAMS ARE FINALLY O-V-E-R! So, guess what I was up to last night? I went to Ash concert at Fort Canning Green. Yes, I went to a rock concert on the night before my exam. And, there’s the Singapore Beer Festival - haha. Talk about getting smash before the big paper! Well, who cares? I spent the entire day studying - and I deserved a break. Plus, it’s a job.

That’s me and my trusty pink notebook (Journalism 101). I’m ready to rock!!

Dress with star scarf from Depression. Tights from Takashimaya. Black Mary-Janes from Bianca. Pearl necklace (as bracelet) from Diva.

This is my boozer “photographer”. We initially found ourselves at the wrong entrance (Singapore Beer Festival) and got press passes for an event we were not invited to! Someone’s happy about that, as you can tell.

The opening act, Fishtank. They’re a really awesome local punk-ska band - do check them out! Very catchy tunes, and alot of charisma. They’ve been around for a decade! I highly recommend their music. Makes you go Electrico who?

I don’t get it. Why are Singaporeans sooo ‘tame’ at gigs? It’s a rock gig for pete’s sake! Get off your lazy butts, people! Start moshing and tear the place down! The security guards had a cruisy night, trust me.

I’m in love with Tim Wheeler, he’s stillllll so hot! I mean, I was 13 when I first heard Ash’s “1977″ album. And, this is the closest I’ll ever get to him. I was ‘right’ in front of him - thanks to my “photographer” pass. My small Panasonic Lumix looked super lame next to the professionals. Dammit. But, I still love my camera.

I had such a fun night - Ash played a good mix of their old, popular singles and some new stuff (obviously, I’m quite unfamiliar with them). I thoroughly like ‘Kungfu’, Girl from Mars’, ‘Shining Light’, ‘Oh Yeah’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’. I noticed that the crowd are mor familiar with the old stuff as well.

Yeah, the people finally got on their feet and hands waving in the air.

They’re such genuine guys, I’m positively sure. All three of ‘em took a bow before they leave the stage. Then, the cry for encore (I mean, they haven’t played ‘Burn Baby Burn’) which only took two minutes before the band took the stage again. Nice! ASHHHHHHHH!!!!

My Bianca shoes are ruined by the end of the day with multiple scratches. Do not wear new shoes to a gig. I left with one ear deaf, and a little high from the alcohol and good music. I woke up this morning hung over, and I had a bloody good exam - life couldn’t be better. Enjoy your weekend, people!

The Results: Shopping at Fash Bash ‘08

So, Fash-E bumped into the early bird, girls from Fashion Nation and I asked them, “So, what’s good to buy?” and they both said “Baylene! Jackets at $50!” I immediately head straight to Baylene stall. As I rummaged through the pile, I found one jacket that I truly like at first sight. It’s quite classic and fits me perfectly. Plus, I don’t have to queue for the changing room!

Ta-dah! My Baylene jacket.

I’m going through a BLACK phase. I tried buying the red shoes that Stephie from FN has and the green version of this but Bianca ran out of sizes! So, it must be fate. We also bumped into Jo from Wottoncool - not sure what she got from Fash Bash. Alright, time to hit the books (I’m on leave today!) before Ash’s gig tonight at Fort Canning Park! Woohoo! I’m rockin’ out the night before exam - classic.

Behold! The Return of Fash Bash

Fash Bash is back!! This year, the inaugural event is held at the Glass Hall, Singapore Art Museum. In my opinion, this was a much better location than the last one at St. James because I can finally SEE the items for once. I even contemplated bringing a mini-torch due to last year’s experience. Jan and I had a nice morning swim, then lunch before heading down for a quick shop-shop session. Don’t worry, we managed to hit the books in the afternoon. We’re quite happy with our buys - I was avoiding the fitting room at all costs!

See how bright the hall is!

Swirl Girls and I. Peace!

Jan, my study buddy. Such a goof ball.

Ooh, I like. Too ex, so I didn’t buy.

Whoops. Not a flattering photo of Granny’s Day Out.

Cute bags! How can you resist these?

Jan trying her dress on the spot! Who needs changing rooms?

Our fashion buys! Shoes from Bianca and jackets from Baylene at a knock-off price of SGD$50!

Spotted: A spiffy pink-van owned by Glamourpuss. I need a ride!

Black Market Art @House, Dempsey

I hate to say this but weekends are too short! It’s freakin’ Sunday night already? Man. Anyway, I didn’t hit the books today since I’ve been a good girl yesterday (yup, I found a study buddy in Jan). So, Bubster and I made our way down to House at 8D Dempsey Road to check out the Black Market Art, “The Greatest Flea Market in the World” (I didn’t say that). I don’t normally check out flea markets - because I’m not really a ‘thrifting’ kinda person and I usually end up empty handed. Black Market Art is not really a ‘flea’ market - as you have brands like Bianca, Style Damsel, Granny’s Day Out, Glamourpuss, Epitome and etc.

Welcome to Black Market Art.

Food. Flea market better come with good food.

Cute animal prints.

Art pieces up for auction - SOLD!

I love these art pieces. The style is whimsical, and original don’t you think?

Haha, I love the cages. Pity the weather was kinda muggy.

Aww. Isn’t this cute? Kids playing - what a sight.

This Weekend: Swirl Swap Swop & Black Market FRESH

Swirl Swap Swop, Saturday (19 April, 2pm)

This weekend is going to be F-U-N. Fash-E is going to Swirl Swap Swop hosted by the lovely, Swirl Girls. It’s happening this Saturday, 19 April at 2pm - so start spring cleaning! If you’re unfamiliar with the entire concept (swirl swap swop what?)… the Swirl Girls wll give you the 101 on this fun, cupcake madness event:

  • Spring clean your wardrobe. Be ruthless.
  • Stuff a shopping bag full of clothes you no longer fit into, fashion disasters and impulse buys. Someone else will love them, we promise.
  • Come by the Swirl boutique on the day of the Swirl Swap Swop.
  • Empty your bags into a giant pile with the cast-offs from other swoppers, who, needless to say, have extraordinarily good taste since they are Swirl Girls.
  • Rummage through the pile and grab those items you fancy. No cat fights, please.
  • Clothes not taken at the end of the swop can be brought home and the rest will be donated to charity. We have donated all clothes from the swops to Beyond Social Services, the flood victims in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, and the needy in Ulu Tiram, Johor.
  • Return home with fabulous finds. Mission accomplished.
  • Remember, it’s all free!

Sounds good? Just drop the girls an email at shop@ilovetoswirl.com to let us know how many of you and your gal friends would like to join in.
